Converting pace and speed

Pace is expressed in minutes per kilometre, speed in km/h. To convert, divide 60 by the pace in decimal minutes: 5:00/km is 12 km/h, 4:30/km is 13.3 km/h. Watches show pace because it reads directly as split times.

Working out your race pace

Your target pace is your goal time divided by the distance. A 4-hour marathon needs 5:41/km; 3:30 needs 4:59/km. Allow a small margin: aid stations, corners and GPS tracks often add 1–2% to the distance you actually run.

Holding your pace on race day

Start slightly slower than target pace for the first kilometres, then settle in. An even pace costs less energy than a stop-and-go race, especially over a half or full marathon.

Frequently asked questions

What pace for a 4-hour marathon?

5:41 per kilometre, an average of 10.5 km/h. With a margin for the distance you actually run, aim for 5:36 to 5:38/km.

How do I convert speed into pace?

Divide 60 by the speed in km/h to get minutes per kilometre: 12 km/h gives 5 minutes per kilometre, 15 km/h gives 4 minutes.

Why does my watch show a longer distance than the race?

The official course is measured along the shortest line. In a race you drift through corners and when passing, and GPS adds some error: 1–2% extra is common.
