Preparing for a marathon is mostly about building volume without getting injured. These 16-week plans follow a 3 weeks on, 1 week easy cycle, with long runs building up to 25–36 km depending on level before the taper.
Threshold and marathon-pace sessions arrive in the build phase. Respect the easy paces: that is what lets you absorb the key sessions.
Weekly volume
Plan phases
Base phase: aerobic foundations. Respect your HR zones and the progression — consistency beats intensity.
Build phase: quality workouts come in. The 48 h of recovery after each hard workout are non-negotiable.
Peak phase: volume and intensity at their highest. Look after your sleep and nutrition — this is where months of training come together.
Taper: volume gradually drops so you arrive fresh on race day. Resist the urge to do more — fatigue fades, form rises.

How many weeks to train for a marathon?
16 weeks is the classic length: enough time to build volume, fit in specific sessions and taper. Having run a half marathon first is best.
What is the longest run before a marathon?
Around 30 to 34 km for most runners, 3 to 5 weeks before the race. Beyond that, fatigue outweighs the benefit.
What pace for a 3:30 marathon?
4:59 per kilometre, or 12.1 km/h. For 4 hours, it is 5:41 per kilometre.
